Week 2: When I Think Love Has Limitations

Day 3 Bible Reading: Matthew 27:32-50

Interrupted Relationship

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (V.46).

The quiet, dark afternoon was interrupted by a loud cry. I imagine it drowning out the sound of sobbing from the friends and family at Jesus’ feet.

“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” Jesus cried out in pain as He hung on His cross (MATT. 27:46). “My God,” He said, “my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Since before the world began, Jesus had enjoyed a perfect relationship with God the Father. Together they had created the universe, made us in their image and planned to save us.

And now, as the agony of the cross continued to bring pain to Jesus—He, for the first time, lost the awareness of that relationship with God as He took on Himself our sin and its punishment.

It was the only way. Only through this time of interruption to their perfect relationship could we be saved. And it was only because Jesus was willing to go through the Father’s rejection at the cross that we can have our own relationship with Him.
