Day 4 Bible Reading: James 1:12-18
Taking Cover
I knew someone who ‘chased’ tornadoes. He tried to keep as far away as possible while observing them, so he could warn others if the tornado was getting too close. One day a really bad tornado changed direction so quickly John found himself in real danger. But he took cover and stayed safe while it passed over him.
John’s close call that afternoon makes me think of sin in our lives. The Bible tells us, “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” (JAS. 1:14-15).
What at first might not seem that bad can soon spin out of control and put us in real danger. But, if we turn to Him when we’re on the edge of making bad choices that are selfish, silly or wrong, God offers us the chance to take cover.
The Bible tells us He would never lead us the wrong way. We can only blame our choices on ourselves. But when we “are tempted, he will also provide a way out” (1 COR. 10:13). Jesus rescues us when we ask Him for help. He will give us the strength to do the right thing.
