The book of Jonah could make a great movie. It’s got Jonah running away from God, a scary storm at sea, Jonah getting swallowed by a big fish, God saving his life and the rescue of an entire city.

But the sequel—the book of Nahum—might not make such a good film. Nahum talked about God in the city of Nineveh just as Jonah had, but about 100 years later. This time, the people there had no interest in giving their lives to God. Because of this, Nahum said God’s judgement was coming to wipe them out.

Just because the city of Nineveh turned to God during Jonah’s story, the Ninevites 100 years on didn’t get a free pass. The decision to trust God is an individual one we all must make. Our parents or some of our friends may love and follow Jesus—but that isn’t enough for us. We must each choose to trust Jesus for ourselves.

God’s message is as fresh today as it was hundreds of years ago: judgement for those who reject God, but mercy for those who trust Him. He promised: “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him” (NAH. 1:7)
