Week 5: When I Feel Anxious and Worried

Day 4 Bible Reading: Psalm 3

How to Keep Going

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me (V.5).

During my daily struggle with chronic pain, even the smallest setback can feel like too much. During the worst days, running and hiding sounds like a good idea. But no matter where I go, I can’t get away from my body’s pain. Because I can’t do anything to change this problem, I am slowly learning to rely on God to keep me going.

When I need comfort and strength, I prayerfully read through the psalms, whose writers honestly bring their troubles to God. In one of my favourite psalms, King David runs away from Absalom, his son who wanted to kill him and rule instead.

Even though David cried over this painful situation (PS. 3:1-2), he trusted God’s protection and expected Him to answer his prayers (VV.3-4). The king didn’t lose sleep worrying about what could happen, because he trusted God to look after him and save him (VV.5-8).

We may want to give up or run away when life hurts and we can’t see a way through it all. But, like David, we can learn to trust that God will hold us in His hands and always be with us.
