Week 1: When I Wonder, "How Long?"

Day 4 Bible Reading: Psalm 62

Telling Ourselves

My soul waits in silence for God only (V.1 NASB).

Following God can be really hard. He asks us to live selflessly. He tells us to keep going without complaining when things are tough.

“My soul waits in silence for God only” (PS. 62:1 NASB). “My soul, wait in silence for God only” (V.5 NASB). These verses are similar, but different. David says something about his soul; then says something to his soul. “My soul waits in silence” is David’s decision about how he will handle difficult times. “Wait in silence” is David telling himself to remember that decision.

David’s decision is to keep following and waiting on God—no matter what. This is what God wants for us as well. It’s the way we were created to live. We will know peace when we agree with God: “Not my will, but yours be done” (LUKE 22:42). This is our first and most important job when we make Jesus our Lord and Saviour. It is also what gives us confidence and satisfaction. “I desire to do your will,” the psalmist said (PS. 40:8).

We must always ask for God’s help, of course, for our “hope comes from him” (62:5). When we ask for His help He gives it. God never asks us to do anything without giving us the strength to handle it.
