“Can you tell me where the magazines are?”

“Sure. I’ll take you to them.”

In big shops, the shop assistants are meant to keep an eye out for anyone who looks lost so they can help out. Instead of just telling them where to go and find what they’re looking for, they are meant to take their customers to whatever it is they’re searching for. Helping people meet Jesus works in the same kind of way.

In John 1, two invitations are made for people to come and see Jesus better. When two followers of John the Baptist asked Jesus where He was staying, He told them, “Come . . . and you will see” (V.39). After spending the day with Him, Andrew found his brother, Simon Peter, and brought him to Jesus (VV.40-41). Later, Philip told Nathanael he had found God’s promised rescuer. When Nathanael wasn’t convinced, Philip said, “Come and see” (V.46).

Telling others about Jesus can be a one-off conversation. But sometimes it will mean walking with them as they think through who He is and what He means to them. Our genuine interest in them, our prayers and our own life with Jesus will join with our words to say: “Come and see Jesus. I’ll take you to Him.”
