Week 89 Bible Reading: Daniel 6

Big Cats And Courage

When Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and . . . prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God. - Daniel 6:10

Did you know that you can hear a lion roar up to five miles away? With strength, power, and speed to match that mighty roar, it’s no wonder the lion is called the “king of the jungle.”

Understanding how fierce lions are shows us the amazing courage of Daniel in the Bible. When Daniel was honored by King Darius, the other leaders got jealous. They schemed, plotted, and figured out a sneaky plan to kill him. They wrote a law saying you could pray only to the king (knowing Daniel prayed to God alone). The punishment? A trip to the lions’ den.

After hearing about this law, Daniel had a tough choice: he could listen to God or avoid the lions’ den. Incredibly, Daniel went home, kneeled down, and prayed as usual, leading the evil leaders to throw him to the lions.

We know this story has a good ending (God miraculously protected Daniel). But our hero Daniel didn’t. He believed the God who created the lion could shut its mouth, but he had no idea God would rescue him from the lions’ den.

Daniel chose to be obedient to God, no matter the cost.

When have you chosen to do the right thing—even if it was a tough decision?

Jesus, give me the courage to be like Daniel—to follow You, no matter the cost.
