Week 82 Bible Reading: Luke 24:13–34

God's Surprise

Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! - Luke 24:31

Have you ever been ridiculously surprised? So much so that you were left open-mouthed, in shock? Maybe you were even blown away, almost to the point of falling over?

Two of Jesus’s friends were dumbfounded and amazed, just like that. But the day they experienced such joy, in fact, started out as one of the lowest days in their lives. Three days earlier, Jesus had been crucified. Not sure what to do, and incredibly sad and discouraged, they began walking. That’s when a stranger approached them. Amazed by His wisdom, they invited Him to continue walking, eventually inviting Him to dinner.

At dinner, God opened the two friends’ eyes to recognize who was with them—it was Jesus! Immediately, Jesus disappeared. The two men, who probably fell off their chairs in shock, quickly recovered. With joy and amazement, they jumped to their feet and ran straight outside, telling the whole world Jesus was alive!

Now you’ve got to admit: That’s probably one of God’s best surprises. Ever.

If you had been the disciples in this story, what would you have done after you learned Jesus was alive?

Jesus, how amazing that You came back to life! You made it possible for all of us to live forever with You!
