Day 1 Bible Reading: Psalm 136:1-15
Praising God's Goodness
-Psalm 136:1
Someone in our Bible study group said, “Let’s write our own psalms!” At first, a few of us groaned. This didn’t sound like much fun at all. But after a few minutes of having a go, we all quickly got into it. Soon we were all able to share a few words about what God had been doing in our lives, what we’d been learning about Him and how He had been looking after us. Like Psalm 136, each of our ‘psalms’ shared the truth that God’s love lasts forever.
We all have a story to tell about God’s love. Some of us might have seen God at work in some dramatic or scary situations—like the writer of Psalm 136 who wrote about how God saved His people from captivity and beat His enemies (VV.10-15).
Some of us may talk about God’s love because we see Him in the amazing world around us: “[God] by his understanding made the heavens . . . spread out the earth upon the waters . . . made the great lights . . . the sun to govern the day . . . the moon and stars to govern the night” (VV.5-9).
Remembering who God is and what He has done leads us to thank and praise God! We can then “[speak] to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit” (EPH. 5:19) about the goodness of God, whose love lasts forever!
