Amazing Languages
Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. - Acts 2:2–4
Have you ever been to a place—maybe a big city—where you could hear conversations in different languages? It’s pretty awesome.
If you had been in Jerusalem on the day Pentecost, you would have heard people speaking in many languages too, as families from every corner of the world came for the spring harvest cele- bration! Then, something miraculous happened. When the Holy Spirit came down in “flames or tongues of fire,” resting on Jesus’s followers, suddenly the disciples could speak the languages of all the city’s visitors (Acts 2:3–4). How amazing! Because they heard Jesus’s story in their own language, three thousand of them started a relationship with Jesus that day.
We may not speak many languages, but the Holy Spirit helps us connect with people in other ways. Amazingly, we are God’s hands and feet—and mouth—to live out His purpose in the world. Today, how can you—with the Holy Spirit’s help—reach out to someone unlike you?
Jesus, show me how to reach out to someone who is unlike me today. Thanks for teaching me how to love others through Your Holy Spirit.
