The lions in Kenya’s Masai Mara game reserve looked harmless when I was there on holiday. They rolled on their backs in the sun. They rubbed their faces on branches as if trying to comb their manes. They drank quietly from a stream. They walked slowly across the dry ground as if they had all the time in the world. I only saw their teeth when they yawned.

But their relaxed appearance isn’t the whole picture. The reason they can be so chilled out is that they have nothing to fear—they’re the top of the food chain. The lions look lazy and bored, but they are the strongest and fiercest of all. One roar sends all other animals running for their lives.

Sometimes it seems as if God is lazing about. When we don’t see Him at work, we think He’s not doing anything. When we hear people make jokes about God and say He’s not even real, maybe we wonder why He doesn’t defend Himself. But God will “not [be] frightened by their shouts or disturbed by their clamour” (ISA. 31:4). He has nothing to fear. One roar from Him and the world would shake!

If you wonder why God isn’t worried when you are, it’s because He has everything under control. He knows that Jesus, the Lion of Judah, will return to us in victory soon.
