Best Friends
Who do you want to be your best friend? Probably someone who is always there for you (and someone you can have fun with too!).
Best friends David and Jonathan were always there for each other, even when it wasn’t easy. You probably know David—the brave teen who killed Goliath with a sling and a stone and who later became king. His friend Jonathan was a prince, the crown prince in fact, which means Jonathan—not David—was supposed to be king.
Was Jonathan jealous when God chose his best friend to be king instead? No way! Rather, Jonathan promised David they’d be friends forever—and he stuck to his promise (1 Samuel 20), even hiding and protecting David from King Saul when the king tried to hurt his friend (you can read more about their true friendship in today’s Bible reading).
Real friends like David and Jonathan give us a tiny picture of God’s never-let-you-down, always-on-your-side friendship. The Bible says nothing—absolutely nothing—can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38–39). He’s always watching over us.
