Week 42 Bible Reading: Judges 6:11–16

Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” - Judges 6:11–12

There once was a young guy who was very frightened. He was so afraid, in fact, that when we meet him in the book of Judges, Gideon is hiding away, in a wine press.

“Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” an angel greeted him. God had specially chosen Gideon to conquer Israel’s enemy, the angel said.

Gideon—hiding out and afraid—a mighty warrior? you may be asking. Seems kind of like a joke. Even Gideon thought the angel had the wrong guy. But God promised to be with Gideon and to make him successful in his fight against Israel’s enemies. Believing God’s promises, Gideon brought Israel victory.

God chooses ordinary people like Gideon—like us—for His plans. We may or may not be the bravest or the strongest or the most popular. But here’s the thing: we have God on our side. And you know that with God’s help, we can do all things.

Do you have a seemingly impossible task? No matter what it is, God promises to help. Hear Him whisper to you, “Mighty hero, I am with you!”
