Three Fearless Friends
Meet three best friends from the Bible—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. (Try repeating all of their names three times fast—quite a tongue twister!)
Their story began when King Nebuchadnezzar ordered everyone to bow to a gold statue—of himself. The statue was enormous: ninety feet high and nine feet wide. (Nebuchadnezzar was full of himself!) Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had a challenging choice: would they follow God, or would they do what everyone else was doing?
Have you ever faced a decision like that?
In this story, the three friends bravely remained standing—even when everyone else kneeled down. Furious, the king gave them one last chance to bow, or they would be burned alive.
“If you throw us in the fire, the God we serve can rescue us,” they told the king, “but even if he doesn’t, . . . we still wouldn’t serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up” (Daniel 3:17–18 MSG).
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were willing to die rather than disobey God. How courageous!
While God did miraculously rescue them (be sure to read the story in your Bible!), the friends showed fearless faith.
