The Rock
You are Peter (which means “rock”), and upon this rock I will build my church. - Matthew 16:18
Have you ever gone climbing on huge boulders? If you have, then you know they’re close to unmovable. No matter how hard you try to push them, they won’t budge.
Jesus named one of His disciples “the Rock” (Peter in Greek), because one day God would build His church on the unbudging strength Peter found in God. First Peter needed to grow into his name. Peter was all big talk—even bragging he’d die for Jesus—but he couldn’t keep his promises.
On the night Jesus needed him most, Peter ran.
On his own, Peter discovered he wasn’t like a rock. But when God filled him with the Holy Spirit’s power at Pentecost, Peter changed. He lived up to his name, even risking his life for Christ.
Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you up with His life and power today! As He did for Peter, Jesus wants to give you a brave heart.
