Week 23 Bible Reading: Genesis 1:26–31

God's Favorite Things

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. - James 1:17 NIV

Imagine that in the kitchen, bacon is frying. But there’s something really weird: you can’t hear the crack-sizzle-pop of the bacon frying up in the pan—or even smell the bacon wafting through the kitchen. It’s colorless too. (Yuck.) As you bite into your breakfast, you discover it has no taste. Living in a world like this—a world in which you couldn’t use your five senses (your ability to see, smell, hear, taste, or touch)—would be extremely boring, right?

God created our five senses so we could experience all His favorite things. Colorful sunsets and sparkling night skies. Soft things that make us go “ooh and aah,” from cozy blankets to alpacas (the cutest animals ever). The sweet, refreshing taste of ice cream, the smell of cake baking in the oven. He doesn’t want us to miss out on any of it.

So, pay attention to the amazing (and sometimes not-so-amazing!) sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures all around you. Some of God’s favorite things (James 1:17).

What sense—your ability to see, smell, hear, taste, or touch—would you miss the most if you lost it?
Jesus, thanks for my five senses. Help me use them to pay attention to all the good stuff You’ve created in the world around me.
