Honoring Others
Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. - Philippians 2:4
Do you know the first American to climb Mount Everest? His name is Jim Whittaker, and in 1963, he climbed 29,000 feet—all the way to the top of world’s highest mountain. What an amazing accomplishment! Jim didn’t do it by himself. His Tibetan guide, Nawang Gombu, helped him every step of the way.
Who should get the honor of reaching the top first? the two had even wondered, when they were a few steps from the summit. Whittaker said Gombu should go first. But Gombu said with a smile, “You first, Big Jim!” They decided to take the final steps together. What a show of humble friendship!
The Bible tells us to honor each other, just as Whittaker and Gombu did. Honoring others could be as small as letting someone go before us in line, or as big as standing up for a friend. Most amazing of all? God gives us all sorts of opportunities to honor those around us—if we’re searching for them.
So get ready!
