Got You Covered
For you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power. - 1 Peter 1:4–5
Have you ever looked at the gear covering an NHL goalie? The dude between the pipes looks like the Michelin Man with a mean facemask and a logo sewn on his sweater. You wonder how he can move with all that stuff on him.
NHL goalies are padded from head-to-toe. And for good reason! Those pucks are hard!
The walk of faith can be a lot like an NHL goalie battling a power play. Every day, as Christians we face the speedy slap shots of life that can injure our faith. We battle shots of doubt, one-timers of discouragement, and rebounds of temptation.
Like the NHL goalie, we need protection. Just as the goalie needs his pads, gloves, helmet, and facemask, the follower of Christ needs a shield.
The apostle Peter says we have such protection.
Peter writes that through God, believers have “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power” (1 Peter 1:4–5 italics added).
We are shielded by God’s power! That can deflect the pucks of everyday life! And not merely in times of trouble. God promises to protect us in every situation until the day Jesus returns.
As a Christian, you are covered—even better than an NHL goalie.
The hardest slap shot ever recorded was by Zdeno Chara during a skills competition in 2012. He fired a shot 108.8 miles per hour! At 6’9” Chara is the tallest player ever in the National Hockey League.
