Big Spring
Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. - John 4:14
In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a pretty cool natural wonder—a pool about forty feet deep and two hundred feet across, which Native AmerIcans called “Kitch-iti-kipi,” or “big cold water.” Today it’s called Big Spring. Underground springs push more than ten thousand gallons of water a minute through the rocks below and up to the surface. The water maintains a temperature of forty- five degrees Fahrenheit. Even in the brutally cold winters of the Upper Peninsula, the pool never freezes. Tourists can enjoy viewing the waters of Big Spring during any season of the year.
When Jesus talked with a woman at Jacob’s well, He mentioned another source of water that would always satisfy. He said, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). He was talking about salvation.
The refreshment that Jesus offers is far better than any natural spring. He alone, the Water of Life, can quench our thirst. Praise God, for Jesus is the source that never runs dry.
